Airtel MD launches programme to promote study of science and technology

Lucy Quist, Managing Director of Airtel Ghana and CIMG Marketing Woman of the year, has launched an initiative, dubbed ‘Evolve with STEM’, to promote the study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in some basic schools across the country.

Speaking at the launch of the initiative at the 26th CIMG Presidential Ball on Saturday 12th December 2015, Lucy Quist said “STEM is critical to nurturing curiosity and developing problem solving skills in young people irrespective of age, level or stage in their education.

Very often, children avoid the study of STEM because they are made to think that these subjects are difficult or boring. That is why this initiative could not have come at a better time. ‘Evolve with STEM’ is aimed at changing mindsets, mentoring and inspiring young people to pursue STEM.”

She continued, “At Airtel Ghana, we believe in the power of potential, that everyone has the inherent ability to realise their full potential. ‘Evolve with STEM’ is aimed at bringing out the best in young people through the rigor and problem solving skills that STEM provides. I am excited about this initiative and the opportunity to pursue this project as the CIMG Marketing woman of the year. I am also excited that the CIMG is fully behind this project.”

Under the project, regular mentorship sessions will be organized in collaboration with school heads and STEM clubs in the selected schools will be reinvigorated to provide a platform for young people to engage in science and technology experiential and practical problem solving.

Lucy Quist indicated the project will be piloted at the Ablekuma Circuit 02, Mataheko for two cluster of schools where she taught as a national service person many years ago.

“Supporting education is one of the key focus areas of our integrated Corporate Social Network Responsibility strategy at Airtel Ghana. We believe strongly in shaping the minds of young people who will in turn shape the destiny of our continent, country and businesses in the future. This is why, as a company, we continue to champion and support this agenda,” she concluded.

Airtel Ghana has received several accolades for its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives including being recently awarded Best CSR Company for Education at the 5th Ghana CSR Excellence Awards.

In his statement, Mr. Kojo Mattah, President of CIMG commended Lucy Quist for embarking on the initiative. He said “the CIMG is fully aligned to this project and we give it our full backing. We want to see many of such initiatives that truly impact on our society. I want to encourage as many members as possible to support this initiative in any way they can.”

Lucy Quist was recently crowned the CIMG Marketing tips and tricks Woman of the year for her contribution to the telecommunication industry, her exceptional leadership, marketing insight and strategy development.

She has been involved in mentoring young people and advocating for the use of STEM to advance Africa’s development.
